Enter a price and a sales tax rate to get the tax amount and the total price.
Adding and removing sales tax
Sales tax is added to the price of most goods at the point of sale, and the rate is rarely a single clean number. In the United States it combines state, county, and city rates, so two stores a few miles apart can charge different totals on the same item.
This calculator adds a rate to a pre tax price to give the total and shows the tax amount separately. To go the other way and find the pre tax price from a total that already includes tax, divide the total by one plus the rate.
Some categories, such as groceries or clothing, are taxed at a reduced rate or exempted entirely in certain places, so confirm the rate that applies to your specific item and location.
The formula
Worked example
100 at 7% tax = 7 tax, total 107.
How to read your result
