Tipping and splitting a bill

A tip calculator does two jobs at once: it works out the gratuity and divides the total among everyone at the table. In the United States, fifteen to twenty percent is the customary range for sit down table service, with the higher end for good service.

One small decision affects the amount. Tipping on the pre tax subtotal is slightly more precise, while tipping on the post tax total is simpler and common. Either is socially acceptable, and the difference is usually a few cents.

When splitting unevenly, because some people ordered more, it is fairer to compute each share separately rather than dividing the total equally.
