Comparing pay on an annual basis

An hourly rate and an annual salary are hard to compare directly until both are expressed the same way. Converting an hourly wage to a yearly figure makes job offers, freelance rates, and raises easy to weigh against one another.

Full time is commonly forty hours a week, though it varies by employer and country. Multiply that by your weeks worked per year, then by the hourly rate, to get gross annual pay. Overtime, if any, should be added separately since it is often paid at a higher rate.

As with any salary figure, the output is gross pay before tax. A genuine comparison between two offers should also weigh benefits, hours, and stability, not just the headline number.

The formula

annualSalary = hourlyRate x hoursPerWeek x weeksPerYear

Worked example

30/hr full time (40 x 52) = 62,400 per year gross.

How to read your result

Use a realistic weeks-per-year figure. Full time is usually 52 weeks; subtract unpaid leave if relevant.
