Enter a distance and time to find your pace per kilometer or mile and your speed.

Pace, the runner's language

Runners think in pace, the time it takes to cover one kilometer or one mile, because it is the most useful way to plan and compare efforts. A steady pace is the backbone of training, and target paces drive race strategy.

Pace and speed are two views of the same thing: pace is time per distance, speed is distance per time. This tool gives both from a distance and a time, so you can translate a finish time into the pace you actually held, or check whether a planned pace hits your goal.

The formula

pace = time / distance; speed = distance / time

Worked example

Running 5 km in 25 minutes is a pace of 5:00 min/km, or 12 km/h.

How to read your result

Pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance, the standard way runners track effort. Speed is the inverse, expressed as distance per hour.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed equals distance divided by time in hours; the tool shows both.
Can I use miles?
