Using the scientific calculator

A scientific calculator extends basic arithmetic with powers, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry, which are the building blocks of most high school and college math and science work. You can type an expression directly or tap the keys.

Order of operations is handled for you following standard precedence: powers first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. Use parentheses whenever you need to override that order, for example to add before multiplying.

Two details trip people up. The trigonometric functions work in radians rather than degrees, so multiply a degree value by pi over 180 first. And log refers to base ten while ln refers to the natural logarithm with base e.
