Mean, median, and when they disagree

The average most people mean is the arithmetic mean, the sum of the values divided by how many there are. It is the right summary when the data is reasonably balanced and no single value dominates.

The mean has a weakness: a few extreme values drag it away from the center. A single very high income raises the average income of a room far above what a typical person earns. The median, the middle value when the numbers are sorted, resists this distortion.

This tool reports both, along with the count and sum, so you can see when they diverge. A large gap between mean and median is a clear signal that the data is skewed and the mean alone may mislead.

The formula

mean = ( sum of all values ) / ( count of values )

Worked example

85, 90, 78, 92, 88 -> sum 433 over 5 values = 86.6 mean.

How to read your result

The mean is pulled toward extreme values; the median is the middle value and is more robust to outliers. Compare the two when data is skewed.
