Understanding the 4.0 GPA scale

Grade point average is the single number schools use to summarize academic performance. On the standard United States scale, each letter grade is converted to a value between 0.0 and 4.0, and every course is weighted by how many credits it carries. That weighting is the part most people forget: a strong grade in a four credit course pulls your average up far more than the same grade in a one credit elective.

Because GPA is cumulative, early grades set a baseline that becomes harder to move as you accumulate credits. A student with sixty credits already on record needs a long run of high grades to shift the average noticeably, which is why advisors stress consistency over single heroic semesters.

This calculator uses the common plus and minus scale, where an A is 4.0, an A minus is 3.7, a B plus is 3.3, and so on. If your institution uses a different conversion, enter your own credit values and treat the output as a close estimate of the official figure on your transcript.

The formula

GPA = ( SUM of gradePoints x credits ) / ( SUM of credits )

Worked example

Biology A (4.0) x 4 credits = 16.0; History B+ (3.3) x 3 = 9.9; Algebra C (2.0) x 3 = 6.0. Total points 31.9, total credits 10. GPA = 31.9 / 10 = 3.19.
