A weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses, so it can rise above 4.0. Set each course type below.

How weighted GPA rewards course rigor

A weighted grade point average adds bonus points for harder courses so that taking demanding classes does not unfairly lower your average. Under the most common system, an honors course adds half a point and an advanced placement or international baccalaureate course adds a full point on top of the normal value.

That bonus is why weighted averages can climb above the usual 4.0 ceiling, often reaching as high as 5.0 for a student loaded with advanced courses. The intent is to reward students who challenge themselves rather than those who pad a transcript with easy classes.

Bonus values are not universal. Some schools add a different amount, and some weight only certain subjects. Set the course type for each class below, and confirm the exact bonus your school applies before relying on the figure for class rank.

The formula

weightedPoints = basePoints + bonus (Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0) GPA = ( SUM of weightedPoints x credits ) / ( SUM of credits )

Worked example

An AP class with an A becomes 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0. A regular class with a B stays 3.0. Two 1-credit classes: (5.0 + 3.0) / 2 = 4.00.

How to read your result

Weighted GPAs reward course rigor and can exceed 4.0 (often up to 5.0). Different schools use different bonus values, so confirm yours.

Frequently asked questions

Why can a weighted GPA be above 4.0?
Because Honors and AP/IB courses add bonus points on top of the 4.0 base scale.
What bonus values does this use?
Honors +0.5 and AP/IB +1.0, the most common convention. Your school may differ.
Which GPA do colleges use?
Many recalculate to their own scale, sometimes unweighted. Check each school.
