Mapping percentages to letters and grade points

Letter grades and grade points are two views of the same performance. A percentage tells you how much of the available credit you earned, the letter summarizes that into a category, and the grade point translates the letter into the value your GPA is built from.

The plus and minus system splits each letter into narrow bands, so an 89 and a 92 both look like B level work at a glance but land as a B plus and an A minus on a transcript. Those small differences compound across many courses into a meaningful GPA gap.

Schools that use straight letters without plus and minus map percentages differently, and a handful use entirely different cutoffs. Confirm your institution scale when an exact grade point value matters.

The formula

Standard scale: A 93-100, A- 90-92, B+ 87-89, B 83-86, ... F below 60

An 85% falls in the 83-86 band, which is a B (3.0 grade points).
