This tells you the grade you need on your remaining work to reach your target overall grade.

Setting concrete targets for remaining work

This calculator generalizes the final exam question to any block of remaining graded work, whether that is a single project, a cluster of quizzes, or everything left in the term. You provide your current standing, your target, and the combined weight of what is still ahead.

Turning a vague goal into a specific number changes how you study. Knowing you need a 92 on the rest of your assignments is far more actionable than simply hoping to raise your grade, because it tells you whether the goal is realistic and how much margin you have.

Remember to add any extra credit to your current grade before calculating, and to combine the weight of all remaining items into a single figure. A needed score above one hundred percent means the target cannot be reached with the weight that remains.

The formula

needed = ( target - current x (1 - weight) ) / weight

Worked example

Current 85%, want 88% overall, remaining work worth 40%. Needed = (88 - 85 x 0.60) / 0.40 = 92.5%.

How to read your result

Use this to set a concrete target for upcoming assignments. A needed score above 100% means the goal is not achievable with the remaining weight.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the final grade calculator?
It is the same math, framed for any remaining graded work, not only a final exam.
Can I plan multiple targets?
Yes - change the target grade to see the score required for each goal.
What if my current grade already meets the target?
Then the needed score will be low or negative, meaning you have a cushion.
